Born by the name of Norma Fraser in St. Andrew, Jamaica. Norma grow up in St. Andrew, suburbs of Kingston together with 2 Brothers and 2 Sisters. Her father was working as a Shoemaker. She was educated at the Merl Grove Highschool in Old Hope Road.
Norma Fraser is a very gifted female singer. By the age of 14 she formed a band with some friends from the CYO, a Catholic Youth organization from St. Mary's Church, Dwight Pinkney and "weedy Head" and made first experience. By the age of 16 she allready had a own her Roots-Reggae Musicstyle.
Her career started in 1961 when she recorded „We´ll be Lovers“, a Jamaican Number One Tune alongside Lord Creator from Trinidad. This Tune stayed on Number One of the Charts for over one year, an Album with the same titel followed. Norma was 19 years old these days....
She went on to record for the great Studio One Label alongside the Skatalites Band and a lot of legendary Artists like Peter Tosh, Dennis Brown or Marcia Griffths to name only a few. In 1967 Clement Coxsone Dodd released her most popular song "The first cut is the deepest". This was the biggest Hit-Record for Studio 1 ever! In the same year the Studio 1 Album was released as well. Norma was voted as the „Best Femal Newcomer“ in London. She signed to Studio 1 in Jamaica and began to record anthologies with reggae greats Bob Marley and the Wailors, Ken Boothe and Delroy Wilson.
1993 she released a Album called „Get up, Stand up“. She went to England for about 2 months and returned to Jamica. In 2000 she migrated to Eugene/ Oregon in the United States.
In 2001 Norma released a next Album called „C´Mom Baby“, proving she is still live & kicking.
In her career she has performed with Artists like Bob Marley, Skatalites, Ken Boothe, Desmond Decker, Burning Spear Georg Clinton and the P-Funk All-Stars and other legendary Artists. Respect is due to this great reggae lady! |
