One of reggae's most original toasters has resurfaced on the local music scene after a long absence. |

Twenty-five years ago when Eek-A-Mouse took centre stage with trademark catch-phrases he was inventing not only a new style, but one of the most unique and colourful stylings in the annals of Jamaica's music history.
The year was 1980, and Wah Do Dem the title of the Linval Thompson-produced single that became the signature hit-tune establishing the singjay born Ripton Joseph Hylton as a household name in the world of reggae music.
After scoring with other hits such as Virgin Girl and Modelling Queen for Henry "Junjo" Lawes, the late producer/owner of the Volcano Sound label, Eek-A-Mouse disappeared from the local scene but not from music. He was making his presence felt across the globe especially in Europe where he has established a strong and loyal fan-base.
"I was in Europe touring and all over the world, America, everywhere," Eek-A-Mouse told Splash. "It's not that I didn't want to be on the local market, but in music I'm like an Olympian representing my country as I tried to establish myself in music," he mused while adding "I'm like a reporter and an investigator". Having established himself abroad, Eek-A-Mouse re-emerged on the recently launched Junior Gong's album Welcome To Jamrock, along with Bounty Killer.
"I have a lot of songs", the entertainer states, "I got one called Tek Weh, I got a song with me and Anthony B called Press A Button and there is this song with me and Bounty Killer and Junior Gong-Khaki Suit. I got about 18 CDs, but in Jamaica their potential has not been explored properly."
Father Escobar
Eek-A-Mouse's stride on the international music scene has seen him acquiring the services of an opening act which he found in the talented Father Escobar.
"I'm the latest thing outta di Eek-A-Mouse camp, you si weh mi a sey," Father Escobar confirms before adding "He (Eek-A-Mouse) is the first man mi voice for at the age of 14, a tune weh hit a England name Still Fire, yu understand, and it went to number four."
Father Escobar performed with the moniker Escobar but changed with his development into a more mature performer and singer.
"We put on the fadda to the escobar because right yah now we get older, yu si weh mi a sey. And right yah now we stop do certain type a songs. Right yah now is a message ting wi a deal wid because wi deh among Eek-A-Mouse and Junior Gong and that uplift you a certain way to see di world now. So I have a single a come up weh a goh slam the earth. It name Don't Sleep With Yuh Dawta.
Both Eek-A-Mouse and opening act Father Escobar are slated for a 36-show tour lasting from September 22 to sometime in November covering Germany, Sweden, Austria and England. |
