They deliver a strain of Reggae music that exudes spirituality, culture, tremendous brotherly love and originality. First Born - five young Guyanese men by birth, Rastafarian (by choice) to their very core are grounded in the roots Reggae culture of Jamaica.
Originally conceived as an a cappella outfit in the 1990's, they achieved a major breakthrough in 1997 with a live showcase on the Freddy McGregor concert at the Guyana National Park, promoted by Walter 'Wally' Fraser's Vizion Sounds Records.
First Born's performance at the event impressed Fraser and the late great Dennis Brown with their unique originality. Fraser immediately signed them to his Vizion Sounds Records company and Brown offered his special vocals on their debut single 'Repatriation Time'.
Repatriation Time featured prominently on their acclaimed debut album Exodus Chapter XIII Verse 2, which was recorded at Leggo's Studio in Kingston, with saxophone contribution and musical direction by the extraordinaire - Dean Fraser.
The album earned them two Guyana National Awards for Best New Artistes and Best New Group.
Since joining the Guyana and Jamaica-based Vizion Sounds Records family circle, First Born's talent, craftsmanship and presence, both in studio and on stage, has blossomed and matured, ably demonstrated with live performances in the company of artistes like Buju Banton, Bounty Killer, Beenie Man, Capleton Sizzla Gregory Isaacs, Luciano Mikey General, Glen Washington, Shaggy and many more.
The Guyanese reggae band felt honoured when, in November 2002, they were invited to Jamaica to participate in the anniversary celebration of the coronation of His Imperial Majesty Haile Selassie I.
The event was staged by three leading organisations in the Rastafarian community in Jamaica was attended by the grandson of His Imperial Majesty.
With the group consistently building rapidly their fan base with their insistent calls for love, unity and prayers in their native Guyana, the band was deeply honoured when asked to perform the National Anthem at the Guyana Miss Universe Pageant and the annual Boxing Day Boxing Championships of 2002.
They culminated that year's home-front engagements with several performances at the flag-raising ceremony commemorating the anniversary of Guyana's Independence. In September 2002, they travelled and opened for international Reggae dancehall artiste Shaggy in Suriname.
Barbados was First Born's next port of call when in March 2003 they were the opening act for Sizzla at the Block party concert, leading into Sizzla s 'Rise to the Occasion' birthday celebration in Jamaica where they shared stage with Coco Tea, Beres Hammond, Sizzla Marcia Griffith, Richie Stephens, Chezidek and many more.
Hard work and dedication paid off in their second album, Confident, recorded in Jamaica at Anchor Recording Studios and Leggo's Studio, with invaluable input from Phillip 'Fattis' Burrell and his generous Xterminator Production Crew. The album also benefited from the magical touch in mixing by Steven Stanley of Steven Stanley Recording Studio.
First Born's third album Wake Up Call clearly shows the group's positive growth, talent expansion and maturity. This latest album features collaborations with Buju Banton on How Are We Gonna Survive, Gregory Isaacs with Muzik Is The Rock, Natural Black on Jah Blessing and a re-mastered track from Dennis Brown, Mr Bojangles.
Their latest single Irites has been getting some good airplay on local radio, along with How Are We Gonna Survive with Buju Banton and Muzik Is The Rock done with Gregory Isaacs. Irits hit the Top 10 on local charts and is reportedly a hot seller in the Florida, New York and California Reggae markets of the US.
Making the rounds on the music video channels from the group are the videos for Irits, Bounce Them Head (both directed by Steven Ventura) and We Have Life' with LMJ (directed by Ras Kasa).
Next to their hometown, they spend a lot of time in Jamaica, recording all their singles and albums, as well as gracing the stage at quite a few events. The group recently performed at Teen Fest as well as Red Stripe Reggae Sumfest's International Night.
