Paul Elliott: Gone but not lost
24 October 05
The artiste, who released his first album, Save Me Oh Jah, in 1999, is back with a new album called Self -Reliance.
Prior to Save Me Oh Jah, Elliot tried for success in 1980 as Culture Paul with the single, Easter Sunday Morning. However, the first hint of popularity came with Save Me ... "This was the album that really give me the break, you know wah a mean," said Elliot.

Now, however, there are high hopes for the current album. Paul 'The Chosen One' Elliott is on mission to get his album, Self-Reliance, in the local and international markets. "Well basically, the album doing well, it get a lot of rotation overseas as well; It could've been much better, but give thanks. I still seeking international deals but right now I just concentrating on the Self-Reliance album," explained Paul.

Indeed the title of the album is something that Elliott takes very literally. He is currently signed to his own company, Stronger Productions, and does his own production work. "Me produce the whola my song, just distribution deals mi do wid all the di major company dem. I work along with other producers and labels like Black Scorpio, King Jammies and Bobby Digital," explained Elliott.

He launched the United States leg of the promotional tour for the album in September, at 'Dancehall Showdown' in Los Angeles. He then performed in Tampa, New Jersey, Manhattan and Brooklyn. "Most of the performances were great, sometimes low, sometimes high," said Elliott.

And, of course, there is no promo without the video. Elliott has also released three music videos, Self-Reliance, Build Another Bridge, and Chat Dem a Chat We.

Elliott, along with other Jamaican artistes, performed at The Untouchable Concert, put on by Togetherness Records, on October 16, in Miami. Artistes such as I-Wayne, Richie Spice, Turbulence Tony Rebel Kiprich, Coco Tea, Natty King, Queen Ifrica, Macka Diamond and Luciano were also on the bill.

"The energy was high. The reception was good, everyting go down well," said Elliot of his performance which featured songs such as Seek Jah Blessing, Self-Reliance, Real Ting, Bun Down Flat, and Chant Dem a Chant We, with Richie Spice.

The promotional tour continues on November 20, when he will travel to Europe for seven weeks. "Jamaica market kinda down so you have to be on the street," says Elliott.

But though he will be off the island, Elliott says he is very interested in working on the festivals in Jamaica come December. As a result, he is currently in negotiations to break the tour and come back and to perform.

After a long break, Elliott plans to ground his music in Jamaica again. "For the past two years we don't work on any Jamaican festivals, but this year we really a plant wi foot back inna di Jamaican market heavy," said Elliot.

An album with King Jammies is also in the pipelines following the completion of work on Self-Reliance.
